About this calculator
- The rates of return are after fees, before tax. Tax on investment returns (PIR) is calculated based on your income using the thresholds effective 1 April 2025: ≤$15,600 = 10.5%, ≤$53,500 = 17.5%, above $53,500 = 28%.
- Employer contributions are reduced by ESCT (Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax) before being credited to your KiwiSaver. Thresholds (effective 1 April 2025) are based on prior-year salary + employer super contributions: ≤$16,800 = 10.5%, ≤$64,200 = 17.5%, ≤$93,720 = 30%, ≤$216,000 = 33%, above $216,000 = 39%.
- In retirement, the PIR applied to investment returns is based on the "Other taxable income in retirement" you enter (e.g. NZ Super, rental, dividends). KiwiSaver withdrawals themselves are not taxable income.
- The fees used are an average for the fund type and will not reflect the actual fees you will pay.
- The returns used in this calculator are the FMCR (Financial Markets Conduct Regulations) return assumptions, after fees and tax at a flat 28% rate.
- The government contribution (member tax credit) is calculated at 25 cents per dollar of employee and voluntary contributions, up to a maximum of $260.72 per year (effective 1 July 2025). It applies from age 16 and ends in the year you turn 65 (last full year of eligibility is age 64). Members earning over $180,000 are not eligible. Employer contributions do not count toward the threshold.
